Edward and Alphonse Elric are brothers living in the village of Resembool in the country of Amestris. Their father Hohenheim left home when Edward and Alphonse were still very young. Years later, their mother, Trisha Elric, dies of a terminal illness. After their mother's death, Edward becomes determined to bring her back through the use of alchemy. However, this attempt failed, ultimately resulting in the loss of Edward's left leg and Alphonse's entire body. In a desperate effort to save his brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm to affix his brother's soul to a suit of armor. After that, Edward's left leg and right arm are fitted with two sets of automail, a type of advanced prosthetic limb.

Edward sets out to become a State Alchemist, enabling him to use the resources available to State Alchemists to discover a way to restore what he and Alphonse had lost. The brothers eventually learn of the Philosopher's Stone and set off in search of it as a means to restore their bodies. Along the way they discover secrets about the Philosopher's Stone they never wanted to know, and find others who seek it as well, doing almost whatever they can to get their hands on it.

The stories of the manga and anime separate soon after the encounter with Greed, and weave vastly different tales. The most prominent of the differences is the primary antagonist. In the manga, this is a man known simply as "Father". Father is the creator of all the homunculi in the manga series and commands them from behind the curtains of the High Command of the country Amestris. It is suspected that Father plans to use Amestris as a gigantic transmutation circle to create a Philosopher's Stone, but the homunculus Envy hints that, although close, this is not the whole truth.

Father's counterpart in the anime is a woman called Dante, a former lover of Hohenheim. Centuries ago, the two were masterful alchemists and perfected methods for making the Philosopher's Stone and a form of immortality in which they use others' bodies until they age. Hohenheim eventually fell in love with another and left Dante, taking with him the perfected Philosopher's Stone formula. Although Dante is still able to jump from body to body to cheat death over the centuries, she is able to spend less and less time in each body as it decays faster with each jump, and each jump results in the stone she possesses to lose its power over time. She uses the Homunculi to spur Edward and Alphonse, along with other Alchemists as desparate as they are, into creating another complete Philosopher's Stone for her.

Edward Elric: The main protagonist, Edward ("Ed") Elric is known as the "Fullmetal Alchemist" and is famous for being the youngest State Alchemist of the country. Edward is of short stature, and typically reacts in an exaggerated manner to any remarks about his height. After losing his right arm and left leg as a result of a failed human transmutation and the binding of Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor, he received automail prosthetics. He starts searching for the Philosopher's Stone in order to recover the body of his younger brother as well as his missing limbs. In the anime, Edward is voiced by Romi Paku in Japanese and Vic Mignogna in the English dub.

Alphonse Elric : Alphonse, often nicknamed "Al," is Fullmetal Alchemist's secondary protagonist; he is Edward's younger brother. For most of the series his soul is trapped in a large suit of armor as a result of performing human transmutation, causing other characters throughout the series to confuse Al with the "Fullmetal" Alchemist. Alphonse is the calmer of the two, and can be seen as a foil to Edward's character. He starts the search for the Philosopher's Stone with his brother hoping to recover their bodies. Alphonse is voiced by Rie Kugimiya in Japanese and Aaron Dismuke is his English voice actor.

Roy Mustang: Roy Mustang is a State Alchemist known as the Flame Alchemist due to his ability to create fire with his gloves He is Edward's direct superior officer in the military, but has his own goal, mainly to become the Führer, leader of the military. During the series, his friend Maes Hughes is killed after discovering the secret of the Ishval Civil War resulting in the start of his search of Hughes's murderer. Roy is voiced by Tōru Ōkawa in Japanese, while by Travis Willingham in English.

Winry Rockbell: Winry is a mechanical expert who is a childhood friend of the Elrics. She, along with her grandmother Pinako, built Edward's automail, and she also helps maintain the automail when it gets broken. Her parents were called into service as doctors during the Ishvalan Civil War and were killed while treating the injured. In the manga, they are killed by Scar; in the anime, they are killed by Roy Mustang. Winry is voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi in Japanese and Caitlin Glass in the English dub.

Scar : Scar is one of the few surviving Ishvalans. His real name is never revealed, but he is referred to as "Scar" because of the X-shaped scar on his face. Scar's right arm, which is tattooed with a rare transmutation circle, was given to him by his brother shortly before he died. Scar believes himself to be an instrument of God, and kills State Alchemists using his alchemical skills, despite the fact that he believes alchemy is an abomination against the natural world. Scar is voiced by Ryotaro Okiayu in Japanese and Dameon Clarke in English.

Father : The main antagonist of the manga storyline, "Father" is the creator of the Homunculi and of Amestris itself, which, along with special alchemists he calls "human sacrifices", is a piece of a far-reaching plan.

Dante : The main antagonist of the anime storyline, Dante is the leader of the Homunculi and she made the first Philosopher's Stone with Hohenheim. Her desire to create another sets the events of the anime into motion. As an old woman, Dante is voiced by Kazuko Sugiyama in Japanese and Cindee Mayfield in English; after taking over Lyra's body, she is voiced by Yumi Kakazu in Japanese and Monica Rial in English.

Ryuk (リューク, Ryūku?)
A shinigami who dropped a Death Note into the human world, which Light would pick up. Acting out of pure boredom, Ryuk begins the story of Death Note on a whim. It is stated that Ryuk obtained the second Death Note in the shinigami world from "tricking the old man" for another one. Ryuk is not Light's ally, and in fact declares in their first meeting that someday he (Ryuk) would write Light's name into his own Death Note. Ryuk often refuses to aid Light and instead enjoys watching him struggle for his goals. He acts for his own interests and entertainment, and often fails to tell Light key details about the Death Note. However, Ryuk will aid Light if it serves his own goals, such as providing amusement or obtaining apples, without which he suffers a form of withdrawal symptoms.
Rem (レム, Remu?)
The female shinigami who first gives Misa her Death Note and trades her for the Shinigami eyes. Similar to Ryuk, Rem possesses two Death Notes; however, she purposely gives one of them to Misa Amane. Rem inherited her second Death Note from Jealous, another shinigami who died when he saved Misa's life, and thought it only right to pass it on to Misa. Rem inherits Jealous' love for Misa as well and is prompt to defend Misa even at the cost of her life. Rem shows this when she states that she will kill Light if Misa dies before her time.
Sidoh (シドウ, Shidō?)
The third shinigami seen in the human world, Sidoh is revealed as the original owner of the Death Note Ryuk dropped at the beginning of the series. Initially upon entering the human world, Sidoh relentlessly follows Ryuk, demanding the return of his Death Note. Ryuk eventually admits he has no knowledge of the location of Sidoh's Death Note, said note having been used as a bargaining chip by Light and fallen into Mello's hands. Sidoh eventually locates his Death Note, and, under questioning, reveals to Mello (who subsequently reveals to Near) that some of the rules written in the Death Note are fake. The English versions of the series and the Japanese volumes use the romanization Sidoh while the Japanese Death Note 13: How to Read book uses the romanization Shidoh.

The Death Note anime, directed by Tetsurō Araki and animated by Madhouse, began airing in Japan on October 3, 2006, and finished its run on June 26, 2007, totaling 37 twenty-minute episodes. Contrary to the movies, the anime series closely follows the original storyline of the first seven volumes of the manga (L's arc) then rushes significantly through N's arc by accentuating many action scenes and skipping monologues or long discussions between characters described in the final 5 volumes of the manga series. There are also a few changes on the character designs, adapted by Masaru Kitao, and the order of facts, as well as a few additional scenes not featured in the original manga. It is also set in the year 2007, instead of starting at the year 2003. The series aired on the Nippon Television network "every Tuesday at 24:56". The series was co-produced by Madhouse, Nippon Television, Shueisha, D.N. Dream Partners and VAP.

In North America, the series has been licensed by Viz for residents in the United States to use "Download-to-Own" and "Download-to-Rent" services while it was still airing in Japan. This move is seen as "significant because it marks the first time a well known Japanese anime property will be made legally available to domestic audiences for download to own while the title still airs on Japanese television". The downloadable episodes contain the original Japanese audio track and English subtitles, and is available through IGN's Windows-only Direct2Drive service. DVDs of the series are also being released, containing both an English dubbed audio track, produced by The Ocean Group, and the original Japanese audio track with optional English subtitles. Viz announced at Anime Expo 2007 that the first DVD was officially released on November 20, 2007, in both regular and special editions, and also confirmed at Comic-Con International 2007 that the first 15,000 copies of each DVD contains collectible figures.

Death Note was slated to make its North American television premiere in Canada on YTV's Bionix programming block on September 7, 2007. However, the show was removed from the schedule at the last minute. The Canadian premiere was pushed back to October 26, 2007, at 10:00 p.m., when it finally premiered. Death Note premiered in the U.S. on October 20, 2007, at 11:30 p.m. on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. The show also streams online for free on Adult Swim Video, with a new episode uploaded every Saturday afternoon, on the day of its broadcast premiere. Death Note has also been aired by the anime television network Animax across its respective networks worldwide, including Hong Kong and Taiwan.

A three-hour animated Death Note Rewrite: The Visualizing God' (DEATH NOTEリライト・幻視する神, Desu Nōto Riraito: Genshisuru kami?) TV special aired on Nippon Television in Japan on August 31, 2007, at 8:03 PM. It is a recap which takes place after the series end, where a Shinigami approaches Ryuk in the Shinigami realm in order to learn more about the human world. Instead, Ryuk tells him of all the events leading up to the Mello/Near arc, about Light Yagami and his rival L. Originally, this special was advertised as a retelling told from Ryuk's point of view, but it doesn't give a different point of view than what was originally told. However, it contains updated dialog, as well as a few new scenes, including an alternate ending.

Twelve years before the events at the focus of the series, the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox attacked Konohagakure. Powerful enough to raise tsunamis and flatten mountains with a swish of one of its tails, it raised chaos and slaughtered many people, until the leader of the Leaf Village – the Fourth Hokage – sacrificed his own life to seal the demon inside Naruto when he was a newborn. The Fourth Hokage, who was celebrated as a hero for sealing the demon fox away, wanted Naruto to be respected in a similar light by being the containment vessel for the demon fox.

The Leaf Village, however, shunned him, regarding Naruto as if he were the demon fox itself and mistreated him throughout most of his childhood. A decree made by the Third Hokage forbade anyone to discuss or mention the attack of the demon fox to anyone, even their own children. However, this did not stop them from treating him like an outcast and as a result he grew up an orphan without friends, family, or acknowledgment. He could not force people to befriend him, so he sought acknowledgment and attention the only way he knew – through pranks and mischief.

The Akatsuki kanji means daybreak, breaking down the word itself gives us "aka" meaning red (a common color in the group) and "tsuki" meaning moon. This Organization is a collection of S-Ranked criminals. Many of these are missing-nins who fled their villages after causing death and destruction. With the departure of Orochimaru, the deaths of Sasori, Kakuzu, Deidara and the neutralization of Hidan, there are 6 active Akatsuki members. The group replaced Sasori with "raw" recruit Tobi, who was eager to do his part. Most members wear a forehead protector from their hidden village with a scratch through it, and all seem to wear a ring identifying their position in the organization and a black cloak with red clouds. When the organization members leave to travel the country they will work in groups of two collecting knowledge of new skills and jutsu.

Their ultimate goal is to control the world; this will be accomplished through three steps. Step One is for the group to attain money. Step Two is to create the first mercenary group. Shinobi villages make money for their country, and for the money to be steady it requires war. Because there have not been any large scale wars in approximately the last decade, the ninja villages were being reduced in size. The Five Great Shinobi Villages could handle the downtrend, but the smaller villages could not. Akatsuki will form their own fighting force with no country allegiance. With this force they will undercut all the other villages and fight their battles for cheap. Then using the bijuu they can create new battles and new wars and gain a monopoly over the whole market. In the end they plan to control all the wars and be powerful enough to even collapse the shinobi villages of the large countries, forcing them to rely on Akatsuki as well. With all that in hand, the group can achieve Step Three, to control the world. It should be noted their goal and plans have been explained by Pain, the man acting as leader. However it has recently been revealed that Pain and the female member reported to Tobi. Tobi was revealed to possess the Sharingan and even possibly be Uchiha Madara himself. What Tobi wants with the Bijuu and powerful Sharingan of Uchiha Sasuke is unknown.
Akatsuki, at any given point in time, is composed of no more than ten primary members. All known members have betrayed their villages they grew up in and are the most wanted and dangerous individuals in the series.

Members of Akatsuki usually work in teams of two. Teams are built to complement each other's abilities and talents to create a formidable duo. Members whose partners have died also operate by themselves until a replacement can be found. At the very least, members maintain a functioning working relationship with their partner, with some form of loyalty to one another being present in most cases. In other instances a member will only work with their teammate so long as it furthers Akatsuki's goals, with all other matters being a source of dispute between the two. In general, Akatsuki members are unconcerned with the fate of their other comrades, their only point of interest concerning someone's death being who was strong enough to kill them.

Akatsuki is a widespread organization, with its members constantly traveling between countries and its agents operating out of various villages throughout the Naruto world. Because the various members are often so far apart, making a meeting in person impractical, they can communicate through a form of telepathy. If there is a need for the group to have more of an interaction with each other, members can use a form of astral projection to meet at one of Akatsuki's many secret lairs. Their meetings are much more frequent in the second part of the series due to their increased

Drake is portrayed as a somewhat simple, cool, lucky, and popular 16-year old person, putting little thought into his decisions. He plays guitar in a band which throughout the series has had many different members, with Josh now acting as manager. Throughout the series, Drake has had many girlfriends. Drake is also the older brother of Megan and occasionally tends to get a little over-protective of her like in "Megan's First Kiss." He is also a very poor student, having little common knowledge on subjects such as geography (for example he does not know where either Vietnam or Switzerland are, does not know that New Jersey is named after the Channel Island of Jersey-"Why is it called New Jersey if they never had a plain old Jersey?", does not know that Africa is not in Europe, and he believed Rome to be in Romania. He also mispronounced South America as "South Ah-ma-reek-ah"), although while Drake mispronounced America in that episode, in an earlier episode, he pronounced the word correctly.

Josh Nichols (Josh Peck)
Usually in the form of actor Josh Peck imitating Jason Alexander's George Costanza or Marlon Brando's Don Corleone, sometimes even Jim Carrey. 17-year old Josh Nichols is the victim of many unlucky events, such as his bike burning in "Helicopter." He is usually the sensible one, who was often taken advantage of by Drake and was portrayed as a nerd with little luck with girls and an interest in science during the first and second seasons. Josh has a habit of questioning or arguing against someone's (usually an adult's) order and then after a stricter call, he immediately obeys. The only real girlfriend he had was Mindy Crenshaw, who also shared his interests, while she is usually sarcastic toward Drake (who pretends Mindy isn't there). Apparently, he has a large head, which is why some people (including Megan) began mentioning, either by regularly identifying him or making fun of him. Josh is known to be a dork which Drake pointed out in "The Dr. Phyllis Show." Examples of this are him making weird noises, him putting on his underwear after his pants (as seen in the episode "Girl Power") , and squealing. can be incredibly sarcastic toward Drake as seen in "Vicious Tiberius" saying that they "just opened" New Jersey. In "Football", it is revealed he is a Spanish expert (for example he knows Ecuador is Spanish for equator, referring to its location.) During seasons 2-4, he often repeated words for emphasis. Josh is also known to like churros (a fried Mexican pastry) and will go to great lengths to get one. In the episode "Steered Straight", Josh was tempted by Drake to use fake identification to get one. Josh's first kiss was with a girl named Susan, seen in Believe Me, Brother, the second episode of the show, who was also Drake's girlfriend at the time. Josh is very paranoid about Megan pulling pranks on him. In the episode "First Crush", Josh states oranges gives him the acid reflux, but in "Pool Shark", Drake states in a persuasive voice, "You like oranges". He also is a big fan of Oprah Winfrey (whom he accidentally hits with his car in "Josh Runs into Oprah") and Henry Doheny. Video games and magic tricks are also some of his interests. He can play the harmonica as seen in "Blues Brothers", "The Gary Grill" and "Alien Invasion". In Drake & Josh Go Hollywood, Josh wheezes when Milo and his crony chase him and Drake, which probably means Josh has asthma or simply because actor Josh Peck does.

Drake is also a musician with his own band. He is shown to have played guitar, and occasionally the drums. He enjoys other artists music as well. It is revealed in the episode "Battle of Panthatar" that Drake is a big Beatles fan after acquiring the Abbey Road album signed by all four Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr). When asked by Josh to give it to Thorton as a Birthday present he replies by saying " No! Dude I love this album more than I love myself! Josh: Dude... Drake: Ok maybe not more than myself, but I love this album a lot!" In Drake and Josh Go Hollywood Josh becomes Drake's new band manager after his old manager got him a gig at the retirement home. Drake's real life song, "Found A Way" is played in the opening credits of the show.

Drake has a poor relationship with his English teacher, Mrs. Hayfer, who totally hates him and reminds him of this frequently. He also has a reputation as something of a prankster; having put squirrels in Mrs. Hayfer's car after using a wire hanger to break into it in the episode "The Wedding", but this incident was never seen. It is because of this, perhaps, that Mrs. Hayfer hates Drake, for she is the first person to blame him whenever trouble arises in the classroom. He is also very arrogant and self-centered, and most of his interaction with Josh was spent either undermining, blackmailing or bullying him. Though as often as he takes advantage of Josh, he is also shown to do unselfish acts for his brother, mostly after he'd already caused Josh some distress. He is also known to do crazy, idiotic and abnormal things, such as shooting real golf balls in their room, and never shows the slightest bit of apology if it damages something of Josh's. Once, in the episode "Dr. Phyliss Show", when Drake damaged Josh's lava lamp, he retaliated by cutting the strings of his guitar. He is very similar to the Friends Character Joey Tribbiani in many ways due to his charm with women and somewhat lack of intelligence. According to some of his girlfriends, he is what Josh calls "great kisser." Once to get his old girlfriend back he set up another date with a girl named Hot Liza to make his old girlfriend Tori jealous. He also mentions he has had over 74 girlfriends.
